DIY Decorative Hot Air Balloons for $5

I wanted my Valentines Day Party to have a theme and like I shared Last week the theme of the party was "Love is in the Air"

I knew I wanted some kind of hot air balloon involved in the party. I searched high and low for a cheap hot air balloon that I could hang from the ceiling above my fireplace. The cheapest I found was $60 for a 7in one. I did not want to spend that. So I decided that I was going to try and make one. Worse comes to worse I would not use whatever I made.

After ALOT of thought I came up with this. Use a $1 store beach ball, paint it and get a small basket (which I found at hobby lobby), fishing line, jute, and a small piece of white fabric.

Since the hot air balloon was around $5 in total I made two.
The outcome was perfect!

I painted the two beach balls one pink and red and the other yellow with white/cream color.

I hot glued jute/twine inside the basket.

with a small piece of white fabric I made little sand bags,
tied with the jute.
(I did not put anything into the little bag because I did not want to weigh down the balloon)

I tied fishing line around the balloon and the tie the jute that was tied onto the basket around the fishing line.

Then I tied fishing line to the part of the balloon that you blow into
and hung it from the ceiling with a thumbtack.

Finished!

I was more then excited about the outcome!
I love cheap but great decor!

What do you think? Do you LOVE it or what?

Dining Room Makeover... another one!

Remember when I moved into my house in NY, I did my dining room like this...?

I liked it. It worked for us. Fast forward 8 months and the black table and chair set was not working for me... It did the job just fine but looked too dark and overwhelming in the space with the 4 chairs and the black made it look really heavy in the room. Not too mention, I never put vinyl on my burlap chairs and my kids did a number on them. Burlap, food, and kids dont mix! PS. Its a 35" square table and it took up most of the space being in the center.  I was over it!

I browsed Craigslist for a month or so... really often... I didn't find anything. I toyed with the idea of building a farm table. I wanted a farm table but I needed a very specific size. It was a tall order for the mediocre Buffalo Craigslist classifieds to fill. Then... I FOUND IT! I found a square white farm table with a wood top and two chairs for $50! YAY!!!! I called the lady and she said she still had it and I could come see it. THEN she warned me. The top was formica and not in the best shape but the table and chairs were sturdy and in good shape. I wanted the base of the table and was willing to pay her price for the perfectly sized farm table base I'd been searching for. I could construct a new table top right??
(Craigslist photo)

I drove my little SUV through the ghetto to her cute neighborhood. Her neighborhood was fine but the area between her little town and mine was scaaaaaary to say the least. HA! I talked her down to $40 due to the condition of the formica table top.

I had the brilliant idea of swapping out the formica top for my black table top since THEY WERE THE SAME SIZE! Meant to be people, meant to be!!!!
BIG thanks to my adorable hubby for going in our garage (where it was 20-something degrees) and doing all the detaching, sanding, reattaching etc.

He brought my table inside and I was in loooooooove! With him and the table ;)

I bought a little tiny can of this magical stuff.... I bought the teeny tiny 8oz can and only used half of it! So remember if you have a smaller staining project, save yourself the money, this stuff goes a long way and you save money by not having to buy Polyurethane! Learn how to stain wood here. I bought it from wal-mart and bought the "gloss" not satin as pictured.

Then....

It didn't go on quite as dark but I love the shade I ended up with. If I would've done a few more coats, I could've gotten a darker shade but I was happy after 2 coats.

I found a few wooden chairs for $3 each and got to work on them. I painted the chairs the same color as my craft room dresser since I had the paint lying around and I LOVE the color.

I updated my curtains by removing the top ruffle and adding a $1 wooden valance that I scored from ReStore. I actually bought it cuz I loved it and had no idea where it was going then about 3-4 months later I figured out that it fit PERFECTLY here! I love that store!
I used the removed ruffle fabric and made these cute little bow tie backs. Eeeek! I love bows!

With a little rearranging, I absolutely love my dining space now!

and... Ta-da!

Here's the move-in photo, progress and AFTER! I love progression photos!

and one last time for fun!

Love it? Pin It

Ahh! It makes me so happy to see it finished! Next, I'll show you the rest of the kitchen. I just refinished the cabinets and I'm in LOOOOVE!!!

How to Incorporate Fresh Flowers Into Everyday Home Decor

Fresh flowers add beauty and cheer to any room of your home, and incorporating them into everyday home décor is easy. The secrets of how to decorate using flowers aren't known just by florists. Anyone can accomplish decorating magic with a pretty bouquet or arrangement.

Incorporating Flowers into Classic Living Spaces

The living room comes alive when fresh flowers are added to the décor of the room. For a classic look, place a flower order for a bouquet of red roses that can be set in a glass vase on a coffee table. A formal flower arrangement created by a trained florist can also occupy a place of honor in the living room. Try placing an arrangement on a free-standing pedestal or end table to draw attention to it. Another option for living room floral décor is to place two tall, thin vases on end tables on either side of the sofa and set a few tall flowers, such as forsythia, in each vase.

The classic way to incorporate fresh flowers into dining room décor is to use them as a centerpiece on the dining room table. If the existing décor is modern and sophisticated, a tall glass vase with a few calla lilies makes an ideal focal point. A rustic country dining room can be enhanced with a bundle of dahlias. For a truly unique look, make a flower order from your local florist for a dozen loose white tulips or roses, then separate them into six separate bright blue glass bottles to create a line or grouping on your table.

For the bedroom, keep flowers looking romantic and loosely arranged. Choose a bouquet that includes many different types of flowers instead of relying on only a single monochromatic look. A basket or rustic tin container makes a great base for a bundle of pink roses, lavender, peonies, daisies, and more. Another romantic idea for decorating with flowers in the bedroom is to fill a wide, shallow glass bowl with water and cut the heads off of flowers such as gardenias, peonies, and dahlias to float them in the bowl along with floating candles.

Enhancing Smaller Rooms with Flowers

Because flowers in the kitchen may encounter blasts of warm air from an oven or stove, the key to great-looking flowers in this room is durability. Choose long-lived flowers that can hold up to anything, such as carnations, for this room of the home. A glass vase may be at risk of accidental breakage in the often-used kitchen, so place flowers in a plastic or metal vase instead.

Most people don't consider putting fresh flowers in the bathroom, but this can be one of the rooms that can benefit most from a pretty bouquet. Because the bathroom tends to be a small room, opt for a small arrangement of miniature flowers, such as miniature roses and grape hyacinth. These can be set into a small jar or colorful ceramic vase and placed on the counter near the sink or atop a bathroom hutch where linens are stored. Alternately, an arrangement of exotic flowers, such as orchids or bird-of-paradise flowers, can add an exciting touch to your bathroom décor.

In addition to the indoor areas of your home, outdoor living spaces can also benefit from fresh flowers. The key to using fresh flowers for decorating outside is to choose looser arrangements and more casual containers. A bouquet of spring tulips in an antique watering can or stoneware vase can work wonders on a porch or deck. Flowers don't have to be cut to make a great arrangement, either. A planter of fresh blooming flowers set at the entryway to a home makes a grand impression for guests coming to visit.

An Invitation NO ONE could say no to!

I wanted to plan an over the top couple Valentine's Day Party for a few of our closest friends. I knew that in order for people to get excited about the party I needed to have an over the top party invite. It would be all about the delivery of the invitation. A friend of mine designed the invite and I was sooo excited about.

I used the Silhouette to cut the scalloped edged.

But I did not stop there...

Like I said before, I wanted the invite to be over the top! I saw a cute invite on http://ohhappyday.com/ but the problem was the girl said the balloon she used would not hold the helium, which meant the balloon would not float. So what I did is ordered these super cute heart shaped balloons.

Since the theme of the party was "Love is in the Air", I knew helium would have to play a part in the invitation.

First, I inflated the balloon with helium, then I tied the balloon with cute bakers twine. I set the invite in the bottom of the box, which were paper cake boxes that I got from a friend that got them at The Restaurant Depot. I put the balloon inside then tied the box with bakers twine added a personal tag and hand delivered each box.

Much to the guest surprise a balloon floated out of the box when they opened it and inside rested the party invitation.

LOVED  IT!!!!!

I did have to deliver the boxes soon after I inflated the balloon, which was a pain but it was soooo worth it!

*Side note*  This is how I was going to send the invite but the cute crinkle paper inside would get caught on the balloon and it would prevent the balloon from floating up.... so I got rid of the crinkle paper and just set the invitation inside by its self.

I really do believe that a great/fun invitation sets the mood for a party!

So could you say no to party with an invitation like that?
